Rivers keep the world viable for living things, or at least a significant number of them. They transport and distribute not only water, but also life, being a shelter for countless species of creatures. Without water, we wouldn’t be where we are now.
Some cultures claim that rivers are the blood of the earth, and Czarna Hańcza is such an artery pumping water into the bowels of the Suwałki Region. Somewhere along the way, it passes Hańcza Lake, then Wigry Lake, which are one of the most important “organs”. In addition, the whole system of smaller rivers or nameless streams, springs, swamps in this network form a single whole – the Suwałki Region.
And Hubert Stojanowski, who for years has been traversing his native Suwałki region with a camera, looks at these water connections from the perspective of a paraglider, bicycle, kayak or from underwater. In these “local expeditions” he also meets people who connected their fates with Czarna Hańcza and the course of the river became the course of their lives. Everything connects, everything intertwines.
