Gutek Film and “Wysokie Obcasy” magazine invite to the special pre-release screenings of a comedy-drama by Cristi Puiu, “Sieranevada”, as part of the „Wysokie Obcasy” Film Discussion Club. “Sieranevada” is a masterful portrait of a contemporary family telling the story of family celebrations that get out of control.

What is the purpose of family gatherings? Love? Duty? Blunt discussions? “Sieranevada”, the most recent film by Cristi Puiu, is a comedy-drama full of black humour about family celebrations with an unexpected finale. It is a keen vivisection of relationships between the loved ones and a reflection on the everyday lies and understatements that form the foundation of every family.
Bucharest. On Saturday morning, a 40-year-old doctor and his wife go to a family celebration in memory of the father that died 40 days earlier. When relatives are waiting for a priest coming late, the secrets come out and the traumas are revealed. The temperature of the meeting is additionally raised with current politics. Soon the family reunion turns into a regular civil war.
Cristi Puiu, along Cristian Mungiu, is one of the founding fathers of the Romanian New Wave. In 2005 his ”The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu” won the Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. “Sieranevada” had its international premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, it was also selected as the Romanian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.
